FSUG-Bangalore:What is GNU Project
From FSUG-Bangalore
GNU project is a software project launched in 1984 to develop a completely free (free as in freedom) UNIX-like operating system. GNU is a recursive acronym for "GNU's Not Unix!", and pronounced "guh-noo."
For a description of the history and philosophy of GNU project, see The GNU Project, essay by Richard M. Stallman, president of Free Software Foundation. The Free Software Foundation is the principal sponsors of GNU project.

The gnu is also an ox-like animal found in southern and eastern Africa. It also happens to be the mascot of the GNU project.
